Aravind Venugopal
Aravind Venugopal is the latest member of the Television team at Screen Digest, having joined in early 2009 as a research analyst. Aravind holds a masters degree in Media Management from the University of Westminster, where he focussed on the strategies of the UK's pay TV operators, and a bachelor's degree in commerce (B.Com) from the University of Pune, India.

Prior to joining Screen Digest, he worked in the creative side of the radio industry, including a stint at the Arabian Radio Network, Dubai.

Despite a slight decline in the rate of economic growth and a downturn in TV advertising, India remains a bouyant TV economy with Screen Digest forecasting growth in TV households (191m by 2013) and pay TV (penetration rising to 79.9%) over the next five years. Analogue cable TV is the largest distribution medium, but satellite TV, with a more upmarket subscriber base and a more stable fee structure, is expected to show the strongest growth. Hindi-language channels are the market leaders but the sector is highly competitive and more growth is likely to come from regional langauge services.

Digitisation of broadcasting is slowly gaining pace, albeit limited to four cities. Restrictions on vertical integration and cross-media ownership are in the pipeline but with voluntary implementation of conditional access generally considered to be the way forward. However, the forthcoming general elections and political uncertainty are applying the brakes to digital expansion.
