Adobe PDF Company Wal-Mart buys Vudu - a big deal? Wal-Mart buys Vudu - a big deal? Wal-Mart buys Vudu - a big deal? Report locked, login or read more about how to purchase this report
Wal-Mart has announced it is to acquire online video service Vudu. The acquisition addresses some of the principal weakness in the retailer's previous attempts to play in the online movies market. However, while consumer devices have proven to be a prerequisite for a successful online strategy they are by no means a guarantee of success. Moreover, Screen Digest believes that Wal-Mart's acquisition highlights an issue facing many traditional retailers as they try to 'go digital': digital content has a track record of helping to grow hardware based ecosystems, but not of helping to uplift other forms of e-commerce in the way DVD is widely credited with doing for brick and mortar stores.

Adobe PDF Company Looking to the future: Netflix and digital delivery Looking to the future: Netflix and digital delivery Looking to the future: Netflix and digital delivery Report locked, login or read more about how to purchase this report
This report looks into the economics of digital delivery and Netflix transition to hybrid physical/digital business. Generating little revenue in its own right, Watch Instantly is a cost centre for Netflix, due to content licensing and delivery costs. The service is acting as a very effective land-grab for Netflix in the digital space, demonstrating the company's impressive agility and maintaining relevancy of the Netflix brand to a rapidly evolving home entertainment consumer.

Adobe PDF Company Project Canvas: Coming into focus Project Canvas: Coming into focus Project Canvas: Coming into focus Report locked, login or read more about how to purchase this report
Further details published on Project Canvas - the free-to-access over the top video joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Five and BT - stress it will be an open platform, not a gatekeeper, an approach that may allow Canvas to avoid the same fate as Kangaroo, which was quashed by the Competition Commission. Nonetheless, Screen Digest believes that the proposals are fundamentally conservative, with the JV intending to retain control of its EPG - albeit on a non-exclusive basis - with pride of place going to the core broadcast JV partners. Significantly, the PSBs will have a majority share of the voting, giving BT and any further ISPs that come on board, little power to block unified broadcaster decisions.
