Guy Bisson

Guy has been researching and writing about the global television business for ten years. He is head of on-line data and statistical information service Television Intelligence. Guy has particular expertise in digital TV, cable and satellite television and programme rights .

As well as writing for Screen Digest magazine and other industry publications, Guy has acted as a consultant for numerous media groups, government organisations and investment banks. He has twice been retained as an expert witness in litigation cases involving major US studios.

Guy has also authored or co-authored a number of in-depth business reports including the annual European Cable Yearbook (now in its fourth edition); European Programme Rights Markets; and European Digital Pay Television: Market assessment and forecast to 2006.

German premium satellite pay-TV operator Premiere has made a major downward adjustment in its reported subscriber numbers following a strategic review by incoming CEO Mark Williams, who represents 25% shareholder News Corporation. The net result of the adjustment, which excludes so-called 'indirect' customers, is a net loss of 940,000 customers, bringing its direct customer base to 2.4m in Q3 2008. Impact of change will not be fully clear until the company reports full third quarter results on November 13

The threat of the widely-expected recession to the outlook of pay-TV company British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) is overstated, GMI believes. BSkyB has been largely unaffected by previous economic downturns and is well prepared to reduce the impact on its revenues. Even so, GMI does not think BSkyB will hit its target of 10m subs by 2010.

The collapse of the deal between Leo Kirch's Sirius Group and the German football league (DFL) for TV rights between 2009 and 2015 is good news for Premiere, the current holder, and News Corp, which has built up a 25% stake in the pay-TV platform. GMI believes a bid for rights by News Corp would significantly increase the investment value of Premiere. However German pay TV market is not without risks and Spanish platform Digital Plus may be a better target.
