Guy Bisson

Guy Bisson has more than 15 years research experience covering the global television markets. He was instrumental in building Screen Digest's television research department and the on-line Television Intelligence data service. Guy has a wide range of consulting experience having carried out work for many of the world's largest media companies and investment banks.

His experience spans due diligence, expert witness work and high-level strategic consulting. Guy presents frequently at international conferences and trade shows and has authored numerous industry reports. He is head of Screen Digest's Television department and directs all TV-related research and statistical modelling activities.

Liberty Global's deal to acquire number two pay-TV player Unity Media, financed by Euro 2.5bn debt and Euro 1bn existing liquidity and common stock sale, is well-timed as the German cable market nears turnaround. The success of the purchase hinges on Unity Media's ability to upsell additional services to its TV subscriber base. The company has already demonstrated significant ability to do so, with incremental RGUs per home and digital TV penetration nearly double that of current market leader KDG.

German premium satellite pay-TV operator Premiere has made a major downward adjustment in its reported subscriber numbers following a strategic review by incoming CEO Mark Williams, who represents 25% shareholder News Corporation. The net result of the adjustment, which excludes so-called 'indirect' customers, is a net loss of 940,000 customers, bringing its direct customer base to 2.4m in Q3 2008. The threat of the widely-expected recession to the outlook of pay-TV company British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) is overstated, GMI believes. BSkyB has been largely unaffected by previous economic downturns and is well prepared to reduce the impact on its revenues. Even so, GMI does not think BSkyB will hit its target of 10m subs by 2010.

The collapse of the deal between Leo Kirch's Sirius Group and the German football league (DFL) for TV rights between 2009 and 2015 is good news for Premiere, the current holder, and News Corp, which has built up a 25% stake in the pay-TV platform. GMI believes a bid for rights by News Corp would significantly increase the investment value of Premiere. However German pay TV market is not without risks and Spanish platform Digital Plus may be a better target.
