DVD replication is suited to the on-demand model. Burn times have been reduced and the cost of components has fallen, so it is now a relatively quick and affordable procedure. The development of selfcontained replication units has made it possible for DVDs to be manufactured on-demand, and on-site, in retail stores and warehouses.

DVD spending is stablising as the decline in prices decelerates. The East European market is catching up with the West. The market for VHS cassettes has all but disappeared completely. Growth in the DVD retail market was maintained in 2006, volume sales in Europe increasing by 10 per cent from 663.5m units in 2005 to 728.3m. Once again, however, the rise in the number of units sold did not fully translate into growth in value as the average consumer price of a retail DVD sank by eight per cent year-on-year from around €14.00 in 2005 to about €12.90 in 2006.

UK is leading the way in developing a genre of DVD programming that utilises DVD's potential for interactivity and commands premium prices Interactive DVD (iDVD) is essentially a game on a DVD. Created using the menu architecture on the DVD, content can be navigated via the user's remote control. To date, the most common use of iDVD functionality has been the quiz-based game. In common with traditional board games, most iDVDs are intended for communal use (although some titles cater for single players), distinguishing the format from most video games.

DVD volume sales continue to climb but spending fell in 2005. Retail DVD sales continued to grow in 2005 albeit at a slower rate than in previous years. Volume sales of DVD increased by 15 per cent to 657m units, accounting for 94 per cent of total European video sales. However, the gain in volume sales failed to be translated into spending as the average price of a retail DVD in Europe declined by around 13 per cent in 2005.

Screen Digest's analysis of distributor market shares in key territories indicates that two distinct markets have emerged since 2000; a booming DVD market dominated by the studios that adopted the format early and a fading VHS market led by children's content specialists.

Games consoles such as the PlayStation 2 (PS2) and Game Boy Advance (GBA) have an immediate but short-term impact on the hardware market, whilst the impact of DVD players is slower but more enduring.
