Piers Harding-Rolls

Piers joined Screen Digest as Games Analyst at the beginning of 2005, having worked as an analyst of the IT services and software industries since 1998. Before joining Screen Digest, Piers worked for seven years as a consultant analyst to International Data Corporation (IDC) working first with the European IT services research team on both consulting projects and its annual research program, and then later for the IDC Asia/Pacific Excluding Japan research team in IT services and software research. During his time working with IDC Piers wrote over forty reports on different technology markets and industries. He holds a 2:1 degree from the University of London.

As Games Analyst, Piers takes a leading role in games related consulting projects, produces industry leading reports on various games markets and manages the development and expansion of the online games intelligence service into new areas of coverage. Recent examples of his published work include, Digital Distribution of Games, published in August 2005, which examines the digital download and Games on Demand markets in Europe and North America and Western World MMOG Market: 2006 Review and Forecasts to 2011, published in March 2007, which is an analysis of the massively multiplayer online games markets in Europe and North America.

GMI has reduced its forecasts of sales for Sony PS3 hardware in light of the poor econiomic outlook and potential inventory shortages in the holiday season. Sell-in estimates for the Sony FY have been cut to a range of 12-13m units (from 15m) on forecast sell-though of 12.3m (previously 14.5m). GMI believes Sony could nevertheless beat its own very cautious estimates by 20-30%.

Nintendo has increased its forecasts for hardware sales in the current financial year, bringing them into line with GMI's expectations and reflecting continuing strong demand for both Wii and DS.
