Virgin Media, the UK cable operator, has commercially launched dynamic advertising insertion, allowing adverts to be placed before and after on-demand videos. Italy's dominant commercial broadcaster, Mediaset, is pushing further into pay TV by driving customers of its digital terrestrial (DTT) service Mediaset Premium toward higher-value subscription packages. With another DTT service, Dahlia TV, following suit, the competitive pressure is rising for News Corp's satellite pay TV platform, Sky Italia. Key to the battle may well be the new rights for league soccer, which run from 2010/11 and are about to be put out to tender.

Verizon and AT&T are continuing to roll out video services in the US, putting cable companies under pressure; in the third quarter of 2008, GMI estimates Verizon's FiOS covered 22% of Cablevision's homes passed. We believe Cablevision is more exposed than other cable companies and that the strong technology/quality play, combined with a wide VoD offer, will tempt away many of Cablevision's higher spending customers.

Virgin Media, the major cable operator in the UK with 3.5m subs, reported a surging increase in video-on-demand (VoD) views: 45m per month, compared to 23m in Q3 2007. While these results are encouraging, 95% of these views are free and VoD is primarly a value-add service to counter churn rather than a major revenue stream. In GMI's view, Virgin Media needs more and better content and must develop ad-supported VoD to see more of a revenue gain from VoD.
