January, 2011 issue Although consumer spending on physical video declined again in 2010, the rate of decline slowed considerably, from -10.1% in 2009 to -6.2% in 2010. Revised video projections suggest that trend will continue over the next few years as spending on Blu-ray disc sales and rentals grows. Also in this issue: the merger between Comcast and NBC Universal moves ahead with FCC approval; cable companies Charter and Cablevision expand their DVR services; and at CES it was official-UltraViolet, which allows consumers to access their digital content from multiple hardware devices, is set for a mid-year launch.

November, 2010 issue Four titles with more than $200m in box office are coming to video in the first two weeks of December but even these blockbusters won't do much to lift the depressed new-release category, which totaled $3bn in gross revenue at the end of the third quarter, vs. $3.5bn in 2009. Overall consumer spending should end the year in-line with our projected 9% decline but spending on Blu-ray movies will likely fall short of our projection. Also in this issue: 3D may make a big splash this holiday season, with Black Friday promos on 3D hardware and an expected release of Avatar in 3D - and more 3D movies appearing on VOD. Netflix intros a streaming-only subscription plan and increases disc-plus-streaming pricing.
