Speakers at PEVE 2010
We would like to thank the following speakers for their contribution at Screen Digest PEVE Digital Entertainment 2010: WARNER BROS. HOME ENTERTAINMENT Jim Wuthrich is President, International, Warner Home Video and Digital Distribution. He is responsible for working closely with the international territories to identify strategic opportunities for the Home Entertainment Group abroad while implementing the Company's current growth priorities.
Wuthrich has been a part of the digital effort since the Studio first began integrating its digital and packaged goods businesses with the successful launch of Digital Copy, which is now being offered by nearly all the major studios. He has also been on the forefront of the Company's efforts to evaluate emerging technologies like manufacturing on demand and SD card kiosk devices.
Prior to his most recent role as Senior Vice President, Digital Distribution, Wuthrich served as SVP, Electronic Sell-Through and Interactive Marketing, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, where he was responsible for developing the market for digitally distributed entertainment product on a worldwide basis. He joined Warner Home Video in 1998 as Director, Marketing and was promoted to Vice President, Marketing Theatrical New Release, Warner Home Video in 2003, managing the release of over 100 titles from film to DVD, including such favorites as "Batman Begins," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "March of the Penguins" and "The Polar Express."
Before joining WHV in 1998, he spent five years at Creative Multimedia, a company that published content to CD-ROM and the Internet. He began his career in marketing at Hallmark Cards.
A graduate of Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program, Wuthrich also holds a degree in business from University of Wisconsin-Madison. SONY PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT McMahon oversees SPHE's European division and is responsible for its DVD, Blu-ray and digital distribution businesses. He also serves as the liaison for all European home entertainment activities with other Sony divisions, including Sony Electronics, PlayStation, Sony Ericsson and Sony Music Entertainment.
Prior to joining SPHE, McMahon was President and Managing Director, Europe, Sony Pictures Television (SPT) with oversight of all television businesses in Europe. During his 12 years managing the European television group the distribution, production and networks businesses achieved significant revenue growth and geographic expansion.
McMahon joined Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) in Los Angeles in 1990, serving initially in the legal division, and moved to the international television division in 1995. He relocated to London in late 1997. McMahon received a JD degree and an MBA degree from the University of Southern California and he earned a BS degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley. REALD
Bob Mayson, Managing Director, RealD Europe has been involved in the still and motion imaging business for over 30 years. After five years in Hollywood managing Kodak's Global Digital Motion Imaging business, he returned to the UK in 2008 to head European operations of RealD. RealD's participation in today's digital 3D cinema began with its first release in 2005 and today RealD has over 9,500 screens under contract and over 4,800 screens installed around the world with its 3D projection technology. Under Mayson's management the company has experienced expansion in Europe: at the end of 2008 it had installed 132 systems into European cinemas, according to Screen Digest research, but by the end of 2009 this figure had risen to 1,227.
In addition to a wide range of professional uses, including high quality 3D visualization tools for science, research and product development, the company now has signed agreements with leading consumer electronics companies Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, JVC, Toshiba, and DIRECTV to integrate its technology for 3D in the home, and it is on this aspect of the business that Mayson will focus in his Keynote speech. Chris Reiser, Executive Vice President, Sony DADC International. Born in Linz, Austria, Chris Reiser has worked with Sony DADC since 1987 and during that period he has overseen many strategic new venture start-ups and facility expansion projects throughout the company's international network of manufacturing, distribution and supply chain centres. Initially, Reiser was recruited to head the IT department of Sony DADC Austria AG. This role saw him drive state-of-the-art information technology roll-outs at company sites in China, Australia and Canada. In 1999, Chris Reiser was promoted to become a member of the board, responsible for Finance. Since 2004 he has headed up Group Marketing, Sales and Distribution and acts as Managing Director of Sony DADC UK. UNIVERSAL PICTURES INTERNATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT Paul Chesney commenced his career in the Home Entertainment Industry in 1983 at Warner Home Video, where he managed UK Operations for nearly 9 years. He then moved onto Disney in a European capacity, managing and planning the operational release of 9 of the Industry's top 10 titles, with BVHE driving the retail sector as the business moved from VHS to DVD format. In addition, Paul was actively involved in initiatives such as launching the Disney Interactive business, along with rebranding and positioning the Disney audio business within the UK retail arena. Paul also chaired the BVA sub-committee responsible for determining the future format of the DVD box as Amaray.
More recently, Paul undertook the role of Managing Director of Technicolor in the UK before moving into Business Development at Independent Music Industry Supplier Disctronics where he developed their UK DVD business to over 15% market share before they sold to Deluxe Media Services. At Deluxe, Paul eventually took on the mantle of SVP Sales and Marketing Worldwide before leaving Home Entertainment and joining Digital Cinema leaders Arts Alliance Media where he was responsible for developing theatrical digital content business and launching an 'Alternative Content' operation which involved acquiring and bringing live and recorded events to digital cinemas Worldwide across the Opera, Music and special interest genres.
Paul rejoined the Home Entertainment arena in March 2009 at Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPIE) as VP International Operations, with a remit to efficiently manage and secure the supply-chain for all territories outside of the USA and CanadaSONY PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT Based in Los Angeles, Mr. Coburn supervises all global operations activity in support of sales and marketing of packaged media (Blu-ray Disc™, DVD, UMD and VHS) as well as a staff of over 200 encompassing all aspects of SPHE's global supply chain.
In his previous role as Senior Vice President, International Operations, Coburn developed a global supply strategy for SPHE, and oversaw the integration of SPHE and MGM Home Entertainment.
Having worked in the home entertainment industry for over 20 years, Mr. Coburn's accomplishments include launching the DVD format in 24 countries around the world, negotiating joint ventures key emerging markets, and brokering high-profile licensing deals.
Prior to joining Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (then Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment) in 1988, Mr. Coburn worked at Rank Video Services in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Coburn holds a B.A. in Economics and Business Studies and an M.A. from Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland.VITAL FINDINGS
Jason Kramer, Founder & Managing Director, Vital Findings, has 13+ years of market research analysis and management experience. Jason's keen grasp of sophisticated methodological designs has provided high quality and uniquely actionable results for a multitude of clients, including Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., Paramount, Yahoo!, and Hulu. Prior to founding Vital Findings, he was a co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at media & entertainment consulting firm Interpret, LLC. Prior to Interpret, Jason was GM, Home Entertainment and EVP, Research & Analysis at Nielsen NRG, Assistant General Manager of Lieberman Research Worldwide's entertainment division, Director of Research at videogame publisher Activision, and ran the TIME/CNN poll at Yankelovich Partners. A cum laude graduate of Yale University, his senior year Jason was awarded Yale's annual public speaking prize, the DeForest Prize.SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES
Effective January 1st, 2008, Dipl.-Ing. Stephan Hotz was appointed as the Head of Product Management Optical Disc. He is responsible for all SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIE's AG activities related to all optical disc formats and to the next generation of Optical Media. With primary focus on the technological development of the Blu-ray Disc. For this new assignment he offers all relevant talents, based on his technical background as well as excellent business know-how and customer relations. After studying Communications Engineering at the Telekom University of Dieburg, Germany, he experienced various engagements in the vacuum technology industry. Since 1995 he was employed in the Commissioning Department for Mastering Technology at Leybold Corporation in Germany. He joined SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES AG in 1999 as Software Developer responsible for the integration of the Servo Motor Technology in the production equipment for Optical Discs. In 2002 he became Key Account Manager for Optical Discs. Since 2004 he was in the position as the Head of Product Management for Blu-ray Disc. SONY EUROPE
Nick Sharples has been Director of Corporate Communications at Sony Europe since 2008, where in addition to responsibility for all aspects of PR and reputation management he is responsible for promoting Sony's 3D 'Lens to Living Room' strategy. For six years before this, he worked in a similar role for Sony PlayStation, overseeing the introduction of the PSP and PLAYSTATION 3 to over 104 countries. Prior to this role, he was European PR Manager for Energis, a FTSE listed B2B telecoms company and earlier Corporate Relations Manager at One 2 One (now T Mobile). Well experienced in the branch, Sven Deutschmann changed from his position as product manager to Bertelsmann in the beginning of the 90s. After positions as Head of sales and customer service, he became Managing Director of topac MultimediaPrint GbmH, Guetersloh, in 1996.
By 1st September, 2002, Sven Deutschmann became Senior Vice President of Sonopress GmbH, Guetersloh, in addition to his former responsibilities.

Effective 1st May, 2005, Sven Deutschmann took over Management of Sonopress Operations in Europe and is additionally to his former responsibilities as Managing Dircector Sonopress Guetersloh, in charge of Sonopress' operations in the U.K., France and Ireland. From 2007 onwards CEO arvato digital services Manufacturing EMEA. Since September 2007, he is also responsible for the worldwide coordination of customers in games and audio segment within arvato digital services.BIG PICTURE DIGITAL PRODUCTIONS
Ryan Mullins is the founder and driving force behind Big Picture Digital Productions Inc. Founded by Ryan in 1997, Big Picture is a niche publisher/developer /producer and distributor for the giant screen (IMAX) film industry bringing their content to home video and other alternative distribution streams. In essence Big Picture manages and exploits content. The company achieved significant financial and industry success with its first title – 'Super Speedway' which garnered rave reviews and international awards (the DVD has shipped over 300,000 units and won Best Entertainment and Best Sound DVD at the European DVD Awards in Dublin 1999). To be creative is to innovate. Big Picture leads the way in the production and distribution of GS films in home video. Parallel Chapter menus, full length making ofs, wide screen video versioning, home science activities, trivia quizzes, video montages, WMVHD bonus editions, Blu-ray with BD Live capability are just some of the examples of value adding features that Big Picture has invented or introduced to the industry. We have exploited our library in: VHS, Laser Disk, DVD, WMVHD, UMD, HDDVD, Blu-ray and the new digital /streaming online delivery world; up next 3D Blu-ray. We explore and harness all the possibilities. Formats are fleeting, content is forever!
We have now completed 16 titles for release on Blu-ray of library of 30 films including four 3D IMAX films. In 2009 we embarked on creating a European distribution consortium and we will start rolling out in those territories this year.BSKYB
Gerry O'Sullivan is the Director of Strategic Product Development (SPD) for BSkyB. Sky's SPD team integrates product and service development across Sky's TV, Broadband, Telephony, Online and Interactive operations. This includes evolving Sky's current products such as Sky+, Sky+HD and Sky Broadband as well as future products and services such as 3D TV. Gerry was previously Director of Product Management at BSkyB, supporting the strategic planning and commercial management of customer product and service propositions including Sky+HD - Europe's leading HD service, Sky+ - the UK's most popular PVR, and the launch of Sky Broadband - the UK's fastest ever growing broadband service. Gerry has also been the Operations and Design Director for Sky Interactive, responsible for interactivity on the digital satellite platform. Starting with a career with BBC News and Current affairs in London as a studio director, Gerry directed all the main BBC news programmes and launched BBC World Service TV. Gerry also launched Australia's first 24-hour news channel as Head of Production. In 1993 he then moved to New York where he was responsible for the launch of the New York broadcast channel WBIS+ as Director of Operations and Engineering. In 1997 he then joined Fox News Channel as Vice President of Operations and Engineering managing a team of over 200 staff, before returning to the UK after eight years to join BSkyB.LEVEL 3 COMMUNICATIONS
Joe Trainor is responsible for executing the go to market strategy for the Level 3 suite of CDN services in Europe. His role is to evangelise the key values of
the Level 3 propositions to the market as well as work with the Level 3 product team to deliver the future product set that the market needs to deliver success online. Trainor has dedicated his career to driving video across IP. With 10 years experience in the industry, he has been engaged in the early adoption of online video, to the modern technical achievements of delivering High Definition video online. An engineering background and 14 years commercial and managerial experience has given him a unique perspective on the trends and commercial future of video online. Prior joining Level 3 in 2008, Joe built commercial success in pioneering start-ups like Narrowstep and Virtue Broadcasting, where he was instrumental in developing the business from start-up to public listing both in the UK and the US. His goal at Level 3 is to show how a network company can 'Broadcast enable the Internet' and deliver the quality and scale that broadcasters and content owners need to commercialise this space. Olivier has over 19 years of business and marketing experience working across two very successful global brands – Philip Morris and Toshiba. Olivier is currently the European assistant general manager of the Consumer Products Division at Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd and has been with the Company for 17 years. He started his present role in October 2005 in Toshiba's European digital consumer products' team, managing product planning and strategy while coordinating efforts between Europe and Japan. After having led the promotion and marketing activities of the HD DVD format throughout Europe until March 2008, he currently focuses on building up Toshiba's strategy in digital distribution of contents. Prior to this role, Olivier had various posts at Toshiba Systemes in France. He gained valuable sales and marketing experience as a product manager, business manager and senior marketing manager across a number of Toshiba divisions. In 2003, Olivier became the senior marketing manager for Toshiba's Consumer Products Division in France, which then led to his current appointment. He completed a degree in Marketing and Strategy from the French Business School at the Institut Supérieur du Commerce in Paris. He speaks fluent French and English.GARDNERS BOOKS
Garry has worked in the Home Entertainment industry for 29 years encompassing, major studio, independent studio, wholesale, & distribution. He also has experience of acquiring product for release in the UK market dealing directly with producers & studios in the US and other territories.
In 1981 Garry joined CBS/FOX (Twentieth Century Fox) at the birth of the video industry and after 3 years subsequently worked for a number of independent studios in sales & marketing roles.
He spent 20 years with Golds (one of the UK's largest & most prolific wholesalers) rising to the post of Group Managing Director. During his time he successfully launched a distribution division, a sales acquisition & distribution division and an off-shore internet fulfilment division as well as driving the DVD, music, games & accessories wholesale business to a £50 million turnover.
Developing all of these businesses has involved dealing directly with ALL studios, their labels and distributors and every customer from independent stores through to chains and multiples as well as non-traditional plus central & local government.
In the latter years e-commerce has become a strong part of the supply chain and Garry's experience in this area is first hand, developing some of the better known players in the UK from their infancy.
Most recently he has taken up the role of Home Entertainment Business Director with Gardners, the UK's largest book wholesaler where he has successfully introduced DVD wholesale and is now expanding their portfolio of services into new supply and retail opportunities.
This wealth of experience means that he is very focused on the varied supply chain solutions required to satisfy customer & supplier needs both for trade and retail.DEUTSCHE TELEKOM
Klaas Bubenzer is Project manager for the Deutsche Telekom since 2005. First as a consultant and since 2007 he works as an employee for the IPTV Department at Products & Innovations, Darmstadt. There he is part of the content team responsible for the product "T-Home Entertain".
Mr Bubenzer is an expert for the German interactive and pay TV market for 10 years now.
After he achieved his master of law, he qualified at the SAE (School of Audio Engineering) to be a multimedia producer. In this time he founded one of the first Web-TV channels in Germany and a VoD Portal. His career started at Endemol in Germany, the biggest German TV production, where he specialized on innovative interactive TV formats. From thereon he consulted the DSF (German Sports TV) and after that, the Deutsche Telekom. In the past he has dealt with the setup of the pay TV portfolio, the TV onDemand proposition and the integration of IPTV into the "connected life and work suite" of the Deutsche Telekom.
Today Mr. Bubenzer is responsible for the projects that deal with the integration of HDTV and 3DTV into T-Home Entertain.DISNEY ABC TELEVISION GROUP
Ariff Sidi works for Disney-ABC Television's Digital Media group where he has had a broad range of leadership responsibilities in Product Development, Operations, and Engineering. Ariff's contributions include engineering and product development oversight for ABC.com's "Full Episode Player," the industry's first Internet television platform, launched in 2006. Ariff has authored ten patents related to digital media distribution and advertising, holds an Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy, and has also authored an academic paper on interactive television to be published later in the year. Ariff is currently on assignment in the UK working with Disney's EMEA Digital Distribution team.
Ariff holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of California, San Diego and an M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles Anderson School of Management.LOVEFILM
Simon is CEO of LOVEFiLM, the UK's largest online DVD & games rental service and entertainment website. The company has over 1.3 million members and operates across UK, Germany and Scandinavia offering a full entertainment service from cinema listings and ticket sales with nearly 2 million trailer views per month, DVD retail, online rental and full digital streaming. The business is a member of both FACT and the Industry Trust.
LOVEFiLM UK has won many awards and more recently named Company Of The Year at the Growing Business Awards 2009.
Previously Simon has held leadership roles in both private growth companies and large multinationals including Worldwide COO, President of Riverdeep, General Manager & VP of Dell's UK and Ireland consumer and small business operations. Before that he was International VP of Sales Operations for PepsiCola, based in the US and General Manager and VP of PepsiCola UK where he launched Pepsi Max, Pepsi Blue and development of the Pepsi Music activity. He started his career as a graduate in Unilever and as a consultant at Deloittes.CINEMA EXHIBITORS ASSOCIATION
Phil Clapp was appointed CEO of the Cinema Exhibitors' Association in October 2007 from the public sector. Before joining the CEA, he had led on policy for the creative industries - including film, music, computer games, fashion and design – at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS following a period where had led on arts policy within same Department.
Phil moved to DCMS in 2001 from the Cabinet Office Social Exclusion Unit, reporting to the Prime Minister on social policy issues such as re-offending, young people at risk and deprived neighbourhoods. Phil joined the public sector in December 1994 from a background in scientific research.SONIC SOLUTIONS
Jim Taylor is SVP and Chief Technologist at Sonic Solutions, the leader in digital media software. He is the author of DVD Demystified and Blu-ray Disc Demystified, the best-selling book series published by McGraw-Hill. Called a "minor tech legend" by E! Online, Jim created the acclaimed Internet DVD FAQ, writes articles about DVD, and serves as Chairman of the International Digital Media Alliance. Jim was named one of the ten 2007 Content Agenda Setters, one of the 21 most influential DVD executives by DVD Report, and one of the Pioneers of DVD by One to One magazine. Jim has worked with interactive media for over 30 years, developing computer software, laserdiscs, CD-ROMs, Web sites, DVDs, and BDs, along with teaching workshops, seminars, and university courses. He is eminently involved in DECE, the cross-industry group working on the electronic delivery equivalent to DVD and BD. Before joining Sonic in 2001, Jim was DVD Evangelist at Microsoft. TECHNICOLOR
Tom Cordiner joined Technicolor in November 2008 and is responsible for all Sales and Business Development activity across EMEA and Asia.
Prior to Technicolor Cordiner served as Sales Director for the Partner Business Unit at Cable&Wireless where he was responsible for leading global sales teams selling managed service propositions into the mobile network operators and other United Kingdom telecoms companies. Previously he has held various senior sales roles at EMC Corporation ultimately leading the client engagement teams into Aviva/Norwich Union as Account Director. Prior to that he spent 9 years in the media/manufacturing sectors with St Ives plc where he was the International Sales Director responsible for the EMEA and US markets.WARNER BROS DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION
Isabelle Bertrand is Business Development Director, Digital Distribution group for the UK/Eire. She is responsible for working closely with the UK digital distribution partners to identify strategic opportunities for the wider business. Bertrand has been at the forefront of driving UK initiatives for Transactional Video on Demand and Electronic Sell-Through markets since the Studio first began its UK digital business, and is a key player in driving digital growth for Warner Bros. in emerging UK markets. Before joining WB in 2007, she spent six years at Universal Music Group, with two of those latter years as VP Digital Sales, on-line & mobile for Universal Music Group International. She began her career in marketing at Canal + Group. A post graduate of La Sorbonne's University law and media Program, she also holds a degree in Marketing.SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT
Tim Wright is Director for Technology for Sony Pictures Entertainment in Europe and is responsible for the studio's technology and content protection standards activities outside of the United States. He is also responsible for promotion of the industry standard for interoperability of digital video services, the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE), within Europe and Asia. Prior to Sony Pictures, Tim worked in security technology for Motorola and in research and standards for mobile security, including mobile TV and content services, for Vodafone. He is also trained in facilitation, and studies philosophy and theology in his spare time.SEVN
Born in 1958, graduated from Sciences Po Paris, titular of a postgraduate degree in management and a law degree, Jean Yves Mirski began his career in
1982 in the Polygram Group where he was responsible for market research for all the group's companies and also for the launch of the first musical VHS.
In 1986 he joined a French independent record producer. Entered in 1990 SNEP (the French phonographic association) as Director for economic affairs,
responsible among others of the Top 50, he became in 1995 Director of Economic Affairs and Prospective and was in charge of Multimedia and New
Technologies. In 1999, Jean Yves Mirski became the General Director of SEVN (French Video Publishers Association) which represents the leading
publishers and distributors of cinematographic and audiovisual works produced on DVD, Blu-ray, VOD where he participated actively in changing the
windows to six months for video in November 2000. After a new action of the SEVN, the new windows got to 4 months in June 2009. Jean Yves Mirski is also
in charge of representing the industry in many negociations and with the public administration. In July 2003, Jean Yves Mirski was named Chevalier des arts des Lettres.FIVE
Jonathan is Head of Digital Media and also all the Diversification activities at Five. Within the last 2 years, he has been responsible for the establishment and development of the Digital Media Group within Five . Charged with establishing Five's Online & VoD strategy and ultimately responsible for driving incremental revenues into the Channel. Most recently, Jonathan has been responsible for leading Channel Five's VoD strategy – primarily focussed upon syndicating Five's Long-form content onto Major platforms such as YouTube, SeeSaw and also CBS interactive. Jonathan is part of RTL's Online taskforce; charged with sharing ideas and strategies with Digital Directors in each of the key RTL group key territories including France, Germany and Netherlands. Jonathan is also a member of the YouTube Advisory Board.MICROSOFT XBOX
Based in Reading, United Kingdom, Jerry Johnson was appointed to the position of General Manager, Xbox LIVE EMEA in 2008. In this role, Johnson heads up a group focused solely on developing the Xbox LIVE service in Europe. With over 11 years at Microsoft driving software and services development, Johnson oversees a business and engineering team dedicated to building a superior Xbox LIVE experience to meet the unique needs of the European market.
Johnson started his tenure at Microsoft headquarters in the United States launching the MSN music service where he also revamped the MSN entertainment content offering. He joined Xbox for the initial Xbox LIVE launch and led the international expansion of Xbox LIVE into 25 countries.
He ran the product team responsible for the New Xbox Experience which rolled out in November 2008 around the world with a new look that was visually appealing and much easier to navigate. The New Xbox Experience focused on bringing entertainment to the living room, both fun to use and accessible to everyone in the family, regardless of whether or not they play games.DEGE
Jonathan Beardsworth is Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Europe, Technicolor and has been with the company since 2006. He is responsible for every aspect of sales and marketing for Technicolor's European businesses in replication and distribution across all sectors, including video, games, software, promotional and retail activities. Prior to his current role, Beardsworth spent the previous five years as Senior Vice President, European Commercial Operations for EMI. A member of the Board of Directors of the Digital Entertainment Group Europe, Beardsworth also heads the DEGE's New and Emerging Technologies Taskforce, which was established in the Summer of 2009 to explore and evaluate the technological and commercial opportunities of current and future home entertainment technologies. Its membership includes consumer electronics manufacturers, content producers and organisations involved in the digital supply chain.Check back soon for more names |
