A mixed bag of highly successful launches and digital content have driven revenue in the fourth quarter of 2011 for the major traditional publishers in the games space. Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Electronic Arts' Battlefield 3 have generated a high-profile stand-off over one of the most lucrative game categories in console and high-end PC gaming - near-future military shooters with heavyweight multiplayer components - that between them have generated shipments of over 37m units, according to IHS Screen Digest forecasts.
Games Hardware Q3 2011 Market Monitor
16 Nov 11

Total hardware on a global basis is down 10 per cent, undoing the 8 per cent year-on-year growth seen in Q2, resulting in 2011's to-date performance showing definite evidence of overall decline. PS3 is the only format to experience year-on-year growth, its later entry into the hardware cycle and early-stage pent-up demand continuing to unlock sales for the console. Decline was driven most strongly by DS/DSi, unsurprising given that its successor, the 3DS, has now been fully available for over two quarters.
