This table provides an IHS Screen Digest estimate of the number of movie and TV content (including children's programming) transactions made by consumers in France split by delivery channel. Data represents total movie and TV transactions split by physical and digital media and by retail and rental. Data on physical video in France is presented by format (Blu-ray, DVD and, where appropriate, VCD and/or VHS). Digital data is split into TV-based cable/satellite video-on-demand (VOD) transactions and those completed over the open Internet on either a rental (aka Internet VOD) or retail (EST) basis. No audio data is provided in these sheets as this would not be comparable. Subscribers should note that it is not possible to quantify the number of individual transactions made via online subscription services, although physical rental transactions made via an online interface (the Netflix/Lovefilm model) are included in our Blu-ray and DVD rental data.

Home entertainment transactions made by consumers in France across all mainstream genres, i.e. excluding pay TV VOD consumption of adult content or live events/sports. These content genres are excluded either because there is no equivalent category of content in the packaged media sector (live events/sport) or because the majority of this genre falls outside the mainstream physical media market for which data is available (adult). The data in the file represents total transactions for France and is split by physical and digital media and by retail, rental and (where data is available) subscription services. Physical video data is presented by format (Blu-ray, DVD and, where appropriate, VCD and/or VHS) and a single 'audio formats' figure is provided for easy comparison. Digital data covers TV-based cable/satellite video-on-demand (VOD) as well as transactions conducted over the open Internet on either a rental (aka Internet VOD) or retail (EST) basis. It is not, however, possible to quantify the number of individual transactions made via online subscription services, so there no transactions are available for this market sector, although subscribers should note that physical rental transactions made via an online interface (the Netflix/Lovefilm model) are included in our Blu-ray and DVD rental data.

This key metric reflects consumer spending on mainstream home entertainment content in France, i.e. excluding spending on live events/sport and on 'adult' content. The former is excluded because there is no direct comparison in the physical video sector and the latter because the vast majority of adult material available in any territory tends to be excluded by default from mainstream physical video data. Thus this dataset arguably provides the best direct comparison with the genres available on physical video media. The tables break down data by format (Blu-ray, DVD plus, where relevant, VCD/VHS and aggregated audio formats), by delivery channel (Pay TV VOD or delivery over the open internet) and by business model (retail, rental and subscription). The file contains five tables showing consumer spending in France in local currency, Euros and US dollars using fixed and variable exchange rates. Consumer spending data includes actual or estimated VAT/sales tax paid by the consumer at the point of purchase.

Consumer revenue is consumer spending less VAT/sales tax and thus represents the revenue collected by the retailer or distributor as a result of consumer activity. This key metric compares consumer revenues in France across the video and music sectors, excluding revenues generated by adult content (where this can be split out) and live events/sport. It is thus arguably the most effective way to directly compare spending on video-on-demand (VOD) services or online video with spending on physical video formats. The tables include both physical and digital media, and cover the key paid-for business models: retail, rental and subscription. Physical formats covered include Blu-ray and DVD as well as VCD and VHS (where relevant) and aggregated audio formats. Home entertainment transactions across all video and music content in France with the exception of live events/sport delivered on a video-on-demand (VOD) basis. This exclusion enables the number of TV VOD transactions to be compared more directly with the number of physical video rentals or purchases. The full dataset includes both physical and digital media (video and audio) and retail and rental/VOD business models. The data does not, however, include transactions made as part of an online subscription service in France since it is not possible to quantify these reliably.

This dataset covers consumer spending on video and music content in France excluding the video-on-demand (VOD) delivery of live events and sports. The exclusion of these content types makes the data more directly comparable with that available for physical and digital delivery channels, which is also included. Physical video formats (Blu-ray, DVD and, where relevant, VCD and VHS) are covered separately while physical audio data is aggregated for convenience. In addition to TV-based cable and satellite VOD (excluding live events and sports), digital data includes spending on retail (EST), rental (Internet VOD) and subscription services over the open Internet. The workbook comprises five tables showing consumer spending in France in local currency, Euros and US dollars using both fixed and variable exchange rates. Consumer spending data includes VAT/sales tax paid by the consumer at the point of purchase.

Consumer revenue excludes VAT/sales tax from total consumer spending figures and thus represents the revenue collected by the retailer or distributor on transactions in France, rather than the actual amount spent. This metric covers consumer revenue from all video and music content with the exception of live events and sports when accessed via video-on-demand (VOD). In addition to all formats and sectors of physical media, the tables cover the digital delivery of video content and TV-based cable and satellite VOD (excluding live events and sports) in France. The workbook contains five tables covering consumer revenue in three currencies (local, Euros and US dollars) at fixed and variable exchange rates. Consumer revenue excludes VAT/sales tax paid by the consumer at the point of purchase.
