Chello expands reach in Romania

August 09, 2011

Liberty Global's content wing, Chellomedia, has launched three TV channels, TV Paprika, JimJam and MGM, on Romtelecom's largest satellite platform, Dolce, which has close to 1m subscribers. At the same time as strengthening the operator's channel line up, Chellomedia also gains a significant number of additional subscribers in the country, with channels joining Dolce Extra and Dolce Maxim packages, giving each channel immediate access to as many as 300,000 homes.

All three channels are currently present in Romania already, TV Paprika is carried on Romtelecom's IPTV service and UPC; JimJam on Focus Sat and UPC, with MGM available on all of these operators. Currently IHS Screen Digest estimates that TV Paprika reaches 250,000 subscribers and JimJam 220,000 in Romania, whilst MGM has substantially more, at over 1.3m. The new subscribers provide a substantial boost to the reach of JimJam and TV Paprika in the country, more than doubling their subscriber bases, while the extra 300,000 homes for MGM provides a significant, if not game-changing increase.

The launch boosts the total cumulative subscriber base to Chellomedia channels in Romania from current levels of 13m to more than 14m. Other noteworthy channels belonging to Chellomedia in Romania include Zone Romantica, MiniMax and Zone Europa. Prior to the launch, Chellomedia was expected to expand its household reach less quickly then other channel owners in Romania, such as Discovery, Disney or Viacom. This is mainly due to these groups having deals with fast-growing satellite TV services, including Boom TV, Dolce TV, and DigiTV. Chellomedia, by contrast, has historically dealt primarily with sister company UPC, and while sticking to this strategy would have meant a slow but steady growth in Chellomedia subscribers, it would also have seen the group lose ground to its rivals.
