Amazon has launched a manufacture on-demand (MOD) service called 'Never Before on DVD', providing customers who want them nearly 2,000 movies from studios including as Disney, Fox, Lions Gate, Universal, Sony and Warner and television shows from CBS Networks, MTV and Nickelodeon. Discs purchased from this collection of titles will be manufactured on DVD-R by the company's CreateSpace service.
Customers looking for a copy of Survivor Season V - Thailand will finally be able to get their hands on a copy. With 'Never Before on DVD' Amazon expands further into the 'long tail' of video retailing, making available titles that would be unprofitable for content providers to manufacture in bulk because of limited demand. Many of the titles are obscure, but likely have strong appeal among their target groups - a chance to own The White Buffalo on DVD is likely very appealing to Charles Bronson fans, for instance, even at $19.98 (for what would likely be a <$5 DVD in the traditional retail channel).
