CE Europe's first Blu-ray 3D is collaborative effort
April 18, 2011 Prague-based digital services provider Brickbox Digital Media, which mainly operates in the Central and Eastern European markets, has authored its first Blu-ray 3D (BD3D) Piranha 3D. The title, which is the region's first locally produced BD3D, will be released in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania and is the result of a collaborative working arrangement between the local rights holders in the four territories. The process was led and co-ordinated by Brickbox which is actively trying to promote Blu-ray in the region. The concept of cross-border collaborations has long been held up as a potential way for independent video publishers in smaller territories to justify the investment required to release titles on new formats (including in the past both DVD and BD). Brickbox has previously co-ordinated a number of collaborative projects on 2D BD, including Slumdog Millionnaire, The Hurt Locker and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Such collaboration can be complicated. On the practical side, different theatrical schedules and release window conventions mean that a BD3D SKU may be released in one country before another. This is a problem in relation to online video piracy, since the local language version of a title may be available for illegal download before its official release date. Meanwhile, disagreements can occur between local rights holders over payment and authoring issues, such as audio tracks, subtitling and menu design. However, if these problems can be overcome, collaboration can significantly decrease costs since releasing in multiple territories increases the number of discs manufactured, which in turn reduces the cost per disc due to economies of scale. According to Brickbox, the cost per BD3D can be reduced by up to 50 per cent under collaborative projects in CE Europe. Collaboration may also be particularly appropriate for BD3D in smaller markets. The fact that BD3Ds will play in 2D on 2D BD players means that only one Blu-ray SKU (the BD3D version) needs to be released per region, as is the case with Piranha 3D. Therefore, although the installed base of Blu-ray 3D households is small, like all previous new formats, the much bigger audience for the 2D version ensures that the BD3D SKU is more economically viable and attractive to rights holders.
