NCR signs distribution agreement with Warner
December 21, 2010 NCR and Warner signed a new distribution agreement in December 2010 making new-release theatrical titles from Warner available via Blockbuster Express-branded video rental kiosks following a 28-day window. The first titles covered under the agreement are to be released to retail in January 2011, though no specific films were mentioned in the announcement. Warner is the third studio to sign on for direct distribution of movies to NCR for its Blockbuster Express kiosks, the first two being Universal and Fox. So far, all have included provisions for a 28-day holdback window intended to improve sales during the crucial first four weeks following a new release's retail release. NCR's arrangements with Universal and Fox give the companies the ability to test the introduction of selected titles with no window at higher rental prices, but the company's announcement with Warner did not indicate a similar provision. Preliminary IHS Screen Digest research suggests that the 28-day window, which has quickly become the standard arrangement between studios and kiosk/subscription rental outlets, has indeed had a positive impact on sales of some tiers of new-release titles. The negatives for rental outlets taking the deals (i.e. delayed access to titles) seem to be being offset by the value of being able to acquire content in quantity, more cheaply and through a 'regular' distribution channel (instead of making purchases at retail or dealing with other, more costly workarounds.)
