Blu-ray retail: hardware ahead of pace, disc sales lag expectations

US consumers continue to eagerly snap up Blu-ray disc players on a pace that bodes well for the format's ubiquitous adoption in the decade ahead. But a combination of factors--from wrenching recession to cautious release strategies by studios--have come together to crimp disc sales. AMR takes a look at the key factors behind the software shortfall, analyzes potential studio strategies to respond to it, and revises its five-year projections to reflect a transition that, it's now clear, will be decidedly different than the VHS-DVD transition that began in earnest 10 years ago.
