Red Bee to supply metadata to Liberty Global's Horizon platform

October 27, 2011

Red Bee Media is to supply rich metadata services for Liberty Global's next-generation TV platform, Horizon scheduled to launch in Q1 2012.

Horizon, which is the result of an industry-wide technology partnership between IOKO (Kit Digital), Liberty Global, Nagravision, NDS, Samsung, Red Bee and others, aims to integrate cable, web-based and personal content with interactions from social media applications such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter through an intuitive interface and recomendation engine. It will also allow consumers to view and share content between multiple devices, wirelessly.

In addition to providing metadata services to Horizon, Red Bee is also commissioned to supply metadata to UPC existing TV channels in the Netherlands, Ireland and Switzerland.

With more than $10.5 billion in revenue (Q2 2011) and a strong portfolio of acquisitions (UPC Broadband, Chellomedia, Telenet and others) Liberty Global is growing fast. UPC operates in 10 European countries serving 13.4 million customers across their cable TV, broadband and voice divisions. This is a significant strategic move for Red Bee, especially within the context of their recent acquisition of TV Genius. With an increased emphasis now on moving beyond TV listings and metadata to content discovery and personal TV guides, this deal should help strengthen their position in the European market.

For Liberty Global, this deal will not only add value by supplementing their current multiscreen proposition but should also drive new growth opportunities from additional advertising space and subscriptions to alternative services. By the end of 2014 there will be 148m active, connected, consumer electronics devices in Western European homes.
