Sony makes further advances with 4K digital cinema systems
July 13, 2010 Sony Professional has signed up more exhibitors to its rollout programme for the 4K projector route, the largest of which is the US and international circuit National Amusements. Operating as Showcase in the UK, National Amusements covers 950 screens worldwide. The first digital screens will go into the UK network (24 before end July) in order to penetrate the growing 3D market, after a delay in digitising due to uncertainty over ownership. Showcase will go with Sony's solution in all 275 UK screens but plans for the the Latin American screens (Brazil and Argentina) have not been elaborated yet. The US circuit will install Sony systems in all 450 screens, which is the total screen base since National Amusements sold off 35 sites to Rave Motion Pictures in January 2010. Sony has also been charged with equipping the US exhibitor AMC's two UK sites (28 screens) following on from the US parent company also choosing the 4K projection system. The installation is expected to be complete by autumn 2010. Tags:
