Technicolor active in 3D BD authoring

August 12, 2010

US film and digital services company involved in all stages of the 3D Blu-ray Disc (BD) supply chain claims that it has contracts to author 15 3D BD titles - half the 30 3D BD authoring projects awarded to date. According to Technicolor it has halved the time originally taken to produce a 3D BD and is on course to match the production time for an average 2D BD.

The award of half the 3D BD authoring projects to Technicolor is impressive, given the competition from other large authoring houses (Deluxe, Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory and Sony DADC), which were also capable of 3D BD authoring by March 2010. Their involvement means that so far there are limited opportunities for the independent authoring houses that have upgraded to 3D. However, the independent authoring houses are likely to receive a boost from the broadcast sector in the near future as broadcasters like Sky in the UK, strongly supporting 3D, commission 3D TV production or have content in the pipeline. In the mid-term, this programming will not just focus on sport but is likely to also include drama, comedy and children's programming, genres that are traditionally in demand on physical discs.
