May 2009 TV technology deals

June 04, 2009

Set-top box deals

- Thomson
Malaysian pay DTH operator Astro has renewed its relationship with Thomson for the supply of standard definition, non-PVR set-top boxes. Whilst the new boxes will still only be able to decoded MPEG-2 signals, they will be housed in a reduced form factor. Thomson also supplies the standard definition PVR STB for Astro's Max PVR service.

- Tivo
The US based PVR technology provider has signed a distribution deal with Evolution Digital for low-cost Tivo-based PVR set-top boxes. Evolution will market the PVRs to its customer base of independent US cable operators. Tivo's service offers operators outsourced PVR and EPG management, along with VoD over IP via embedded support for Amazon's Unbox. Tivo has already signed deals with national MSOs; Comcast and Cox, but a low cost version could appeal to independent operators which often lack the CAPEX to launch and manage advanced services independently.

Conditional access deals

- Securemedia
Italy's TVBlob has chosen US based Securemedia's Encryptonite conditional access and DRM solution to protect content delivered via the internet to its Blobbox. The Blobbox is a DTT PVR STB with hybrid-IP connectivity, making internet content such as YouTube, Picasa and Google's Gmail accessible to HDTV sets. The integration of Encryptonite with the TVBlob platform is designed to encourage owners of premium content to launch Blobbox services, by providing intrinsic content protection.

Middleware deals

- Dreampark
The Swedish IPTV middleware vendor is to enter the Croatian market for the first time. Croatian systems integrator CS Computer Systems is deploying Dreamgallery middleware with IPTV operators in the country. CS Computer Systems' first deployment of Dreamgallery took place in February 2009.

- NDS
NDS has made further gains in the German cable market with new deals for its digital TV solutions. Kabel BW, Primacom and Tele Columbus will all be deploying PVRs powered by NDS' XTV. Primacom and Tele Columbus have been using the UK based company's Mediahighway middleware since 2008. This deal with Kabel BW will see the operator deploying Mediahighway for the first time. Germany's largest cable operator KDG and DTH operator Premiere have also deployed NDs solutions on their digital platform.
