Warner moratorium for classic titles on DVD
December 16, 2010 Warner Home Video is to withdraw three of its classic movie titles from sale on DVD on 31 December 2010, in anticipation of their respective 60th, 50th and 45th anniversaries in 2012. The titles, Singin' In The Rain, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and Camelot are to be re-mastered in preparation of their 2012 Blu-ray Disc (BD) and collector's edition DVD releases. Such strategies are far from unknown to Hollywood; Disney regularly uses moratoriums on its key animated titles, releasing them for a short time only. According to the Hollywood major this drives far higher sales than a strategy of persistent availability since the titles can be positioned as 'new release' products and, thus, sold at a higher price than a film their age would otherwise command. This approach could easily be adopted for any number of blockbuster titles and, following Disney's example, need not coincide with specific anniversaries. Withholding some strong titles from sale in this fashion would enable studios to better maintain the strength of their release slates in the face of slower release years such as that experienced in 2009. Furthermore, through scarcity, the price commanded by such titles could be better controlled by content owners, assisting consumer price perception in the overall video market.
