Ymagis takes leap forward in major European d-cinema markets
October 11, 2011 French digital cinema deployment and services company Ymagis has taken two significant steps forward in key European territories by signing a major agreement with local Spanish distributors and a grouping of German cinema exhibitors. Ymagis very recently signed two local Spanish distributors to back company's d-cinema deployment programme (Baditri Films and Olwyn Films) and followed this up within days by agreeing a deal with 16 other local Spanish distributors. They are: Absolut, Avalon, A Contracorriente, Alta Classics, Barton Films, Deaplaneta, Festival Films, Filmax, Golem, Karma Films, Savor, Tripictures, Vertice Cine, Vertigo, Wanda and Yedra Films. Ymagis has also signed a deal with German exhibition grouping Cineplex, which is an association covering 460 screens in 85 complexes belonging to 25 different families. The deal covers digitisation of 423 screens (so not quite all members have decided to join in this conversion) and is scheduled to be concluded within six months. Ymagis are providing various services to Cineplex, including VPF management and financing while a range of service companies (CineProject, FTT Rutgers, Kinoton, Ymagis Engineering Services, will undertake installation. On top of the six US majors, Ymagis now has agreements with distributors accounting for 99 per cent of Spanish prints and this enables Spanish exhibitors, which have been lagging compared to other countries, to digitise fully. Of the Top five exhibitors in Spain, as at H2 2011, Yelmo has achieved near-full digitisation and Cinesa is nearing 50 per cent penetration across its estate. The other three circuits are yet to pass 10 per cent digitisation, very low compared to exhibitors in other European countries. The other point to note is the fact that Ymagis has brokered an industry-wide deal, on a commercial basis, with all size of distributors which is not only unique in Europe but is also a clear indicator that the model proposed by the French company suits the economics of the different-sized players in Spanish distribution. Ymagis now has 2,200 screens signed to their deployment programme, of which 1,600 should be installed by end 2011. The important point about installed screens is that they are then generating VPFs for repayment of the digital equipment. Starting slightly later than other deployment entities in Europe, Ymagis is catching up with them in terms of screens deployed, and while each company goes through periods of high activity, these announcements position Ymagis well in three of Europe's largest five markets (France, Spain and Germany), although Arts Alliance and XDC both have a wider geographical coverage than Ymagis both in market reality and in terms of their targets.
