ITV sells stake in Arsenal and Liverpool FC broadband units
UK broadcaster ITV has sold its 50 per cent stake in Arsenal Broadband UK Ltd, the company behind Arsenal FC's online operations, to KSE UK for £22.7m (€28.5m). KSE UK, which is owned by US sports entrepreneur Stan Kroenke, had previously bought a 10 per cent share in Arsenal Holdings Plc from ITV in 2007. ITV has received a total of £65m (€82m) from KSE UK for its interests in Arsenal. This equates to a loss of £12m since the broadcaster's Granada unit bought the share in Arsenal Holdings for £50m and invested £27m in Arsenal Broadband.
The deal marks the end of ITV's financial involvement with football. ITV began disposing of its football assets in February 2007. Since then the broadcaster has sold stakes in Liverpool FC, Liverpoolfc.tv and MUTV. Including the latest sale, ITV has generated £101m (€127m) by withdrawing from the football business.
Our take... The sale is a continuation of ITV's disposal of non-core assets. However, by selling stakes in football clubs' online operations the broadcaster is exiting the market at a key time. Sports websites are increasingly looking to monetise their traffic, particularly through the use of video. Online sports video (OSV) can command high CPM rates for ad-supported business models and a significant number of fans are willing to pay subscription fees to access video content through a club's online property.
Screen Digest forecasts that OSV will generate more than £80m in the UK in 2012. Individual clubs, particularly high profile teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, have the potential to capture a significant portion of this.
