HBO shows available through US iTunes store
Following a deal with Apple, a selection of six Home Box Office (HBO) series are available on a digital retail basis through the iTunes store (iTS) in the US. Episodes of Sex and the City, The Wire and Flight of the Conchords are priced at $1.99 (€1.45), with The Sopranos, Deadwood and Rome costing $2.99 (€2.20) per show.
Our take...The deal with Apple represents a significant departure from HBO's typical subscription business model. HBO has been conducting a limited trial of its own online service, HBO on Broadband, since January 2008 but this operates as a bundled subscription, available only to existing HBO customers. By offering content through the iTS HBO is set to directly monetise its shows through transactional downloads, instead of using them as a value-add. Screen Digest believes the US digital retail online TV market will generate revenues of $260m (€190m) in 2008, the bulk of which will be captured by the iTS.
The content available from HBO through the iTS is archive; none of the shows currently offered for download is in the catch-up window. This strategy prevents cannibalization of HBO's core subscription offering. Digital downloads instead sit in a later window, alongside HBO's strong DVD business.
The use of variable pricing for HBO series marks the first time Apple has strayed from the standard $1.99 price point for TV shows on its US store. This move follows the introduction of alternative price points for TV shows in both Germany and the UK. Apple's decision to use a variable pricing structure is likely to be a response to content owners' demands. Many have expressed a desire to charge a premium for current or popular shows, whilst using lower price points for older content. By moving away from flat-rate pricing Apple may find more content owners willing to join the US iTS.
