ProSiebenSat.1 extends online video deal with Sony
ProSiebenSat.1 Group has extended its existing deal with Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) to distribute content online. Under the agreement new release and library movies and TV shows will be added to the maxdome.de service.
New release movies are available on a digital rental basis whilst library titles and TV shows can be individually rented or viewed as part of a subscription. Consumers will be able to rent episodes from some current series, such as The Tudors and Damages through Maxdome up to one week before television broadcast. Archive shows from the '60s and '70s will also be offered.
Our take...
Whilst movies from Sony had previously been available through Maxdome, the new deal extends the SPTI catalogue to include TV content. This catalogue expansion is timely as Maxdome faces increased competition in the transactional online TV market following the launch of TV shows on iTunes Germany at the beginning of April 2008. Both services offer shows from ABC and ProSiebenSat.1 but iTunes does not currently sell SPTI content.
Consumers have typically demonstrated a reluctance to pay for catch-up TV content, preferring ad-supported streaming. According to Screen Digest, the German free-to-view online TV market generated revenues of €13.6m in 2007, compared to just €0.9m from transactional services. However, Maxdome may persuade consumers to pay for premium TV shows by offering them in a window before TV broadcast.
