Hardware and software manufacturer Apple reported its highest quarterly shipment of Mac computers in 3Q 2008: 2.6m, representing a 20.6 per cent growth on the year-ago quarter and a minor rise from the 2.5m sold in the previous quarter. iPod unit shipments reached 11.1m in the quarter, showing an 18 per cent growth on the year-ago quarter and a small growth of 41,000 on units sold in 2Q 2008. This excludes sales of the upgraded range of iPods released on 4 September. iPhone shipments were 6.9m in 3Q 2008, after the release of the 3G iPhone on 9 June, and compared to 1.1m in the year-ago quarter. The company does not report Apple TV sales.
Our take...
Sales of the iPod and iPhone devices have seen increased sales quarter-on-quarter. Of the two devices, sales of the iPhone saw highest quarter-on-quarter growth in the three months to September 2008 , exceeding combined iPhones sales to date, while iPod sales have remained largely flat quarter-on-quarter. Despite the low growth in iPod shipments, however, the device continues to dominate the MP3 player sector in many markets. Apple estimates its share of the US MP3 player market over 70 per cent as of September 2008, while reporting that it has gained share year-on-year in international markets including UK, France, Germany, Japan, Canada and Australia according to its findings. Meanwhile, the relatively flat growth of Mac computers quarter-on-quarter (albeit a slight increase) can be attributed to users delaying purchases in expectation of the release of the new line of Macbooks (which arrived after the close of 3Q 2008 in October 2008) and to a cut in US schools' discretionary spending budgets detrimentally affecting purchases.
