The total level of French film production increased 12.3 per cent to reach 228 feature productions in 2007, against 203 in 2006 (and a record 240 in 2005), according to data from the CNC. Of those titles, 133 (58.3 per cent) were wholly-French titles, up from 127 titles in 2006, and the most recent high for the number of home-grown films since at least 1995. There were 95 co-productions, of which 53 were majority French initiative, up from 76 the previous year. Total investment in feature production hit €1.20bn, falling just short of the 2005 record of €1.28bn, but nonetheless the second highest total. Films of French initiative accounted for a large 84.0 per cent of total expenditure, up from 72.6 per cent the previous year. However, the average budget per title (including co-productions) of €5.3m was down slightly on the €5.7m of the previous year.
Film production spending in the UK reached £722.9m in 2007, down from £840.1m in 2006, but up by 25 per cent on 2005's total level of expenditure (£577.0m), according to data from the UK Film Council. There were 112 films produced in 2007, of which 58 were categorised as UK-only titles, up from 54 in 2006. Despite, the increase in titles, there was a fall in total expenditure for the same category of films to £141.0m, which together accounted for 19.5 per cent of total production spend. In terms of inward investment into the UK, total expenditure fell 14 per cent to £508.1m on 26 titles. The most significant fall occurred for co-productions (other than inward) with just 28 titles in 2007, down from 53 in 2006 and 67 in 2005. Despite this, the average budget of a UK co-production rose to £2.6m in 2007, against £2.1m in 2006. This compares with the average budget (£2.43m) of a UK-only production, which was down on the £2.83m average the previous year.
