In Ireland, U23D grossed a total of Euro 89,538 (£67,492) from just eight screens in its opening weekend. The average revenue per screen equated to Euro 11,192 (£8,436) and ranked as the highest per screen box office average that weekend. Digital 3D screens now account for over 27 per cent of digital screens in Ireland at end 2007.

According to data from Nielsen EDI, U23D grossed a total of £223,556 in the UK (and Ireland combined) from 67 screens (of which eight were in Ireland), including Imax locations. Distributed by Revolver Entertainment, the film ranked as fourteenth at the UK box office, while the per screen average equated to £3,337, the fourth highest of any film that weekend. According to our analysis, the Irish screens therefore accounted for 30 per cent of the total UK revenue, while the per screen box office in Ireland was also three times higher than in the UK-only venues. In addition, the live 3D concert film may have a different release pattern to a typical blockbuster, with a longer run and therefore lower opening weekend box office ratio.

In the US, U23D had been playing on Imax screens on limited release, but U23D grossed a total of $1.03m for 19th place in the box office chart in its widest weekend release (686 venues) . However, the film was reportedly sharing screen time in digital 3D equipped cinemas with the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus concert movie (613 locations), which raked in a slightly greater $1.5m that weekend for a total US gross of $62.0m in just under four weeks of release.

At end 2007, there were 986 digital 3D screens in the US accounting for 21.5 per cent of total digital screens, but the number of screens will need to increase further to support a high profile 3-D slate from the US Studios. Dreamworks Animation has announced a change to its schedule for digital 3D titles in 2009. As a result How to Train Your Dragon is delayed until March 2010 (from November 2009). The decision was linked to a now heavy line up of digital 3-D titles in Q4 2009, including Toy-Story and Avatar.
In addition, Screen Digest has added a list of digital 3D movies scheduled for release on Cinema Intelligence, including provisional as well as confirmed results, and is therefore likely to change.
