> Shanghai Film opts for Christie projectors

China's Shanghai Film Group Corporation (SFC), one of the major vertically-integrated film groups in the territory, has selected DLP Cinema digital projectors from Christie Digital Systems for its digital cinema deployment plan. Under terms of the deal, SFC will purchase and install 100 2K projectors from Christie for its United Circuit multiplex circuit, as part of an initial phase of a larger roll-out. The first installations are expected to be completed by April 2008.
Our take...
The deal will add significantly to China's already fast-growing digital cinema screen base. At end 2007, China was the second largest territory for d-screens worldwide (564 screens), after the USA (4,632). The deal also represents a coup for Christie in the Chinese market, which has so far been dominated by Belgium-based projector manufacturer Barco. As part of an initiative with China Film Group, Barco and GDC technology will supply equipment for a target of 2,000 screens by end 2008.

Digital cinema up and running secure

Roll-out is accelerating rapidly in the US, thanks to AccessIT's early installations (with studio support), while Europe seems to be biding its time. The number of commercial d-cinema screens in the world grew by 253 per cent in a year, from 848 to 2,996 at end 2006. This number doubled between the end of the first half 2006 and the end of the year, from 1,474 d-screens to the eventual 2,996. The rate of change has largely been the product of an industrial scale roll-out in the US. AccessIT is driving this progress and has now exceeded 2,000 installations of its 4,000 initial target.
