> AccessIT selected for independent roll-out

AccessIT, the leading D-cinema facilitator in the US market, has been selected by NATO's The Cinema Buying Group (CBG) to provide the logistical and service support for its digital cinema roll-out of up to 8,000 screens. The group decided to expand its collective weight currently used for bulk purchasing and negotiation in cinema concessions and other equipment, into the digital cinema realm, for its 600 exhibitor members representing a substantial 8,000 screens in the US and Canada, equivalent to around 20 per cent of the screen base in North America. The AccessIT tender was selected from a short list of four D-cinema integrators including Technicolor, Kodak and Digeserv, and reportedly offered distinct advantages from its extensive experience of deploying just shy of 4,000 D-cinema screens in the US as well as competitive cost offering.

Our take...
AccessIT has secured commitments from four US majors to continue to provide digital content for its second phase of deployment targeting 10,000 screens in North America. Under the deal, the Studios also agreed to contribute virtual print fees for a limited time only and it will be necessary to finalise longer term financial contributions for roll-out on CBG member screens, which will reportedly include small contributions from exhibitors themselves. Many exhibitors will be especially keen to upgrade at least a proportion of their screens, sooner, rather than later, in order to capitalise on a wave of high-profile 3D films in 2009. The move also ensures that the independent exhibitors aligned to the scheme will not be left behind in the migration to digital equipment, a now widely recognised risk for smaller exhibitors and single screen cinemas worldwide. However, as an alternative strategy, several smaller exhibitors have had some success adapting their business models to finance and make full use of the digital equipment, including using alternative programming, such as Kino Cinemas in the UK.

Film production and distribution secure

Steady growth continues in world film production, as Russia becomes Europe's second largest producing country, after France, India replaces the EU as the largest producing region and average US budgets exceed $30m. World film production hit 4,858 feature films in 2006-a steady 4.6 per cent increase and the most recent high for world feature output. The increase was led by volume from Asia, particularly the Far East, where 2,481 feature films were produced, the highest total in that region since 1990. Growth was led by China, Japan and India.
