Microsoft add Paramount movies to Xbox store in UK and Ireland
Microsoft has added movies from Paramount Pictures to its Xbox Live Video Marketplace in the UK and Ireland. A total of 19 movies will be rolled out on the service over three weeks from mid-February, including new releases such as Transformers and Disturbia and a selection of library titles. All movies can be downloaded on a rental basis costing 250 Microsoft points (approximately £2.13/€2.91) for standard definition. Half the titles are available in high definition for 380 points (approximately £3.23/€4.42).
Paramount is the second Studio to offer movies through the Xbox Live platform in Europe; Warner titles have been available through the service in the UK, France, Germany and Ireland since December 2007. The addition of Paramount titles will bolster the store's library in the UK and Ireland which is small in comparison to the choice of movies available to Xbox 360 users in the US.
In the UK, the Xbox store offers far fewer titles than rivals Arts Alliance Media, BT or Coolroom. Despite this, Screen Digest expects Xbox to assume a strong position in the UK movie download market, mirroring its success in the US. Device-centric services such as Xbox Live and iTunes have driven uptake of online movies whilst PC-based stores have struggled for market share. According to Screen Digest the number of online movie transactions in the UK grew from less than 30,000 in 2006 to almost 150,000 in 2007, with the Xbox service largely responsible for this rapid growth.

Current-gen console releases
Sega, having sidestepped the Christmas market, is leading the industry with the most releases for the current-generation games consoles - eight of them based on new intellectual property - in the first quarter of the new year. Nintendo's Wii is catching up with Microsoft's Xbox 360 in terms of number of releases, although the aggressive support for Wii over Christmas has not persisted into the new year.
