> Japanese Nintendo DS games sales hit home run

Respected Japanese games market researcher Media Create has announced that the DS has sold a total of 100 million pieces of software in its home territory of Japan.

It's a milestone that's taken three years and five months since the handheld's launch to achieve, surpassing the PlayStation 2, which took four years and three months to reach such a target. Of the 922 titles released since launch, 21 have sold over a million units. Of the top ten bestsellers, six are updates of established Nintendo franchises, while the remaining four belong to Nintendo's budding stable of training titles (Brain Training 1&2, English Training DS and Big Brain Academy).

Aside from persistently vigorous hardware sales, and scope for breaking new ground in terms of software genres, the DS has been a viable target for budget publishing since launch. Screen Digest expects Japanese DS software sales to equal, rather than eclipse, those of 2007, resulting in a total of around 130 million units by the end of this year.

Current-gen console releases secure

Sega, having sidestepped the Christmas market, is leading the industry with the most releases for the current-generation games consoles - eight of them based on new intellectual property - in the first quarter of the new year. Nintendo's Wii is catching up with Microsoft's Xbox 360 in terms of number of releases, although the aggressive support for Wii over Christmas has not persisted into the new year.

Next-generation console games secure

Our analysis of the first stages of marketing of the latest generation of games consoles-Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii-shows the relative strength of the software release slates, based on exclusivity, existing franchises and the creation of new intellectual property (IP). Each of the developers has a different strategy and each has its own advantages, although Microsoft-which launched its format first-retains an advantage in terms of titles on the market.
