Activision has announced that its downloadable 'Variety' map pack on Xbox 360 has achieved one million downloads in nine days, surpassing the record set by Halo 3's recent 'Legendary' map pack.
This establishes a new record for paid downloadable content on Xbox Live Marketplace. Released on April 4, the arrival of the Variety map pack was followed by some 30 million multiplayer game sessions and 32 million hours of playtime logged by Call of Duty 4 players during the following nine days. April 24 marks the end of a period of Xbox 360 exclusivity in North America, whereupon the content will be made available to PS3 owners via the PlayStation Network. In Europe, it's due to arrive on May 1.
The CoD4 map pack comprises four new multiplayer environments, retailing for 800 Microsoft points on Xbox Live: - CoD4 Variety map pack = 800 points on XBL Marketplace
- 800 points = €9.30
- 1,000,000 downloads @ €9.30 = €9,300,000
- XBL users = 10,000,000
- CoD4 downloads = 1,000,000
- Penetration = 10%
CoD4's success with its digitally distributed expansion pack affirms a bright future for well-positioned additional gaming content, and Screen Digest expects that the release of GTA IV on April 29 will demonstrate similar potential for larger packs of downloadable content.
