> Wii Fit powers Nintendo into 2008

Sales data from respected Japanese games market observer, Famitsu, indicates that Nintendo's Wii Fit, a game designed to enable people to undertake and track the effects of a daily exercise regime, has resonated strongly with consumers with over 1m units sold barely six weeks from launch. Sales performance is all the more impressive considering Wii Fit is bundled with the a Balance Board peripheral which forms an integral part of the gameplay which pushes the price up significantly compared with standalone Wii games. Wii Fit's UK price has been confirmed as £69.99 and þ89.99 in other European territories which is more than double the £30 price point for most UK standalone Wii releases. The title is due to be released on April 25 in the UK and May 19 in the US.

Wii Fit is one of Nintendo's key releases for Wii in 2008. The title's emphasis on participation by all members of the family reflects Nintendo's successful strategy of designing games to appeal to demographic groups who would not usually consider video games as a form of entertainment. Screen Digest expects strong and persistent Wii Fit sales throughout 2008 which will increase the average sales price of Wii games.

Next-generation console games secure

Our analysis of the first stages of marketing of the latest generation of games consoles-Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii-shows the relative strength of the software release slates, based on exclusivity, existing franchises and the creation of new intellectual property (IP). Each of the developers has a different strategy and each has its own advantages, although Microsoft-which launched its format first-retains an advantage in terms of titles on the market.
