> News and weather services spruce up mobile sites

  • Associated Press's Mobile News Network product aims at bringing national and local news from AP members to mobiles. Initially in testing phase, the service will be optimised for smartphones' rich multimedia capabilities, with the video content being operated by Transpera. Local news providers will be able to manage the local ad inventory, whilst national ad sales will be handled by traditional ad networks. AP will centralise technical and ad-serving operations. Mobile News Network will launch publicly in the summer; meanwhile discussions are underway with mobile operators and manufacturers in developing the service and its access conditions.
  • The Weather Channel has launched video advertising on its mobile website, shortly after having introduced video forecasts for mobile. Ads will take the form of banners, five-second pre-roll and 15-second post-roll spots. Initially, the inventory will be sold packaged, ensuring brand section exclusivity. The Weather Channel claims an average 6.3m unique mobile visitors in 2007. Competitor AccuWeather.com partnered with mobile video specialist Rhythm NewMedia to offer ad-supported weather forecast videos. The service includes city-specific, regional, national forecasts as well as video alerts. Videos will be 2 minutes long and include pre and post-roll advertising.

Our take...
News and weather are commodity services highly valued by mobile consumers and yielding high rates of return (up to several views a day). Furthermore, short forms of content are well suited for mobile and advertising tie-ins. Limiting pre-rolls to five seconds is thus a reasonable way to introduce advertising without alienating viewers in the process.
