> UK ad supported MVNO reaches 100k subs

UK ad-funded MVNO Blyk hit its 100,000 member target six month ahead of the year-end announced target. Using the Orange network, the MVNO offers users (aged 16 to 24) 43 voice minutes and 217 SMS in exchange for a daily maximum of 6 promotional message (SMS or MMS). Blyk claims it completed over 600 campaigns and yielded an average response rate of 29%. Factors driving these high response rates are, according to Blyk, the quality of the opt-in member base, the interaction of campaigns and the relevance of the messages both in content and timing.

Blyk counts companies such as Xbox, Adidas, STA Travel, COI, Penguin, Brylcreem, Boots and RSPCA as advertisers. The MVNO also launched promotional campaigns for musical artists in offering tools to promote release, advertise tour dates and distribute free content. Blyk will launch before year's end in the Netherlands through a partnership with Vodafone.

Our take...
The success of an ad-supported MVNO contributes to making mobile a credible marketing tool offering a personal and relevant experience to the user. However Blyk is closely followed by many traditional operators who are also considering launching ad-supported services in order to lower entry price points. The biggest challenge for blyk is indeed the need to quickly build a critical mass to offer an inventory big enough to compel advertisers that remain prudent with mobile.
