New mobile music services in Germany; New mobile music services in Germany

Nokia has opened its mobile music store in Germany several months after its launch in the UK in November 2007. Single track downloads cost 1 Euro each and albums can be purchased for 10 Euros. All music from the store, part of Nokia's Ovi suite, is protected with Windows Media DRM and tracks can be downloaded over the air directly to the mobile device or sideloaded from the computer. Nokia plans to roll out the service in nine more countries by the middle of 2008, including France, Italy, Spain, Australia and Singapore. Also in Germany, Vodafone has released two new products as part of its mobile music service, the Mobile Music Client and Mobile Music Manager. The Mobile Music Client is an on device portal enabling easier access to the Vodafone music store and is currently available for the Sony Ericsson W910i and V640 devices. Mobile Music Manager is a media player designed for the computer which can play all music available on the user's computer, not just music from the Vodafone store.
Our take...
The launch of the Nokia Music Store in the UK did not meet much success with operators citing concerns over competition with their own content services. Only two of the five operators in the UK were willing to sell the Ovi enabled devices. German magazine 'WirtshaftsWoche' claimed that T-Mobile Germany was also shunning the latest Nokia devices on the German launch of the Nokia Music Store. The magazine reported that T-Mobile Germany has reduced the number of Nokia devices offered to ten from fifteen earlier in the year. All of the devices currently stocked by the operator are incompatible with Ovi. T-Mobile has refuted these claims, stating that the company has not ruled out the Ovi enabled devices and is in talks with Nokia concerning the handsets. Whether T-Mobile does take on the latest Nokia devices or not remains to be seen, but it seems that the reluctance to take on the devices is unlikely to be limited to operators in the UK market. Vodafone's new services and subsequent promotion of its Music Store comes as the company signs a deal for the second year to sponsor the music show 'Deutschland sucht ein Superstar'. With these announcements, the operator appears to be seeking to boost its mobile music sales and offer greater competition to Nokia's entry to the German mobile music market.
