Leading handset manufacturer Nokia and Italian mobile content provider Buongiorno have entered into a revenue sharing deal. As a result Nokia is set to introduce Buongiorno's BlinkoGold mobile site through the Download! application on 10 of its devices including the N70, N82 and N95. The content, which includes videos, music, graphics and games, will initially be made available to Italian subscribers with plans to release the service in France, Spain, Brazil, China, Russia and the USA at a later date.
Our take...
Nokia sold 115.5m handsets in Q1 2008, giving it an estimated market share of 39 per cent, according to Nokia. This announcement highlights Nokia's determined move into the mobile content services. With its Ovi portal, set to launch later this year, Nokia aims to offer a fully integrated content service with music, maps, games, email and share. The deal with Buongiorno implies that Nokia is not particularly concerned with whether it provides the content for the Ovi portal itself, but more with offering a comprehensive selection of content.
