> UK mobile TV platform closes

British Telecom's mobile TV venture BT Movio has ceased its operations on 31st January. Virgin Mobile was the only mobile operator selling the mobile TV service which was composed of five TV channels and more than 30 radio stations. The service launched in October 2006. Less than a year later in July 2007, BT and Virgin Mobile agreed to close the mobile TV platform after poor uptake results. GCap subsidiary Digital One, which is in charge of the spectrum, hasn't yet announced a partner to replace BT Movio.

Our take...
The lack of compatible handsets, poor content portfolio, and limited service coverage are known to be the reasons behind this failure. The UK is now without a mobile broadcast service like most other European countries. Although mobile broadcast deployments using UHF frequencies are expected to emerge during 2008 across Europe, the lack of free UHF spectrum in the UK limits the possibility of the launch of another mobile TV platform before the analogue switch off deadline in 2012.
