> Nokia to acquire Trolltech

Norwegian linux software developer Trolltech has accepted Nokia's offer of NOK 16 per share in cash to acquire the company, valuing the company at around Euro 105m ($153m). The acquisition is expected to complete in the second quarter 2008. Trolltech's Qt technology allows application development across desktop and mobile platforms, allowing for greater integration between the phone and home PC. Trolltech is also the company behind Qtopia, an application platform used in many Linux-based mobile phones, including those manufactured by Motorola, a major competitor of Nokia.

Our take...
Closer integration between mobile and desktop is clearly part of Nokia's content strategy. The new Nokia Music Store and N-Gage games platform allow users to buy content both on the mobile or home environments. Nokia has indicated that Qt will form part of its new Ovi content services suite. The first devices to integrate Qt will be N-Series phones, Nokia's flagship multimedia devices, of which the company shipped more than 38m in the last calendar year.

Nokia also indicated this acquisition could see the development of more Linux devices; of the company's current range, only the relatively unpopular tablet devices are Linux-based. The acquisition of Trolltech also brings to Nokia some expertise in working with the open source community, which has historically been part of Trolltech's culture but not Nokia's. Open source platforms are regarded as better for software developers as the nature of open source allows a wider development community to become engaged with a platform, spurring development effort by smaller companies and individuals.
