Mobile user generated Video services improve their offers
- YouTube: Video user-generated content (UGC) site YouTube expanded its mobile offering in making the majority of its catalogue available on 3G video capable handsets. Until then only a selection of the site's library was available to mobile users. In addition, YouTube facilitated the content upload and management from mobile devices and made available a Java application that can be installed on a wide selection of compatible devices. YouTube also began to roll out its 'partner programme' oustide the US, starting in the UK. The programme entitles creators of popular content for a share of the corresponding advertising revenues.
- Metacafe: YouTube competitor Metacafe teamed with mobile content specialist Zed to introduce a 'send to mobile' functionality on the UGC site. Metacafe had already pushed for mobile content through its desktop application that allows content to be sideloaded onto Nokia phones. Metacafe has also inked distribution deals with mobile content distributors Buongiorno, Dyuna and Mobile Streams.
- YoSpace: Mobile video UGC service provider YoSpace (subsidiary of the Bauer Publishing Group - formerly Emap) unveiled the 'eyevibe' service. Poised to replace 02's and 3's respective YoSpace-powered efforts in the UK, the cross-operator service will consequently offer greater community opportunities. Eyevibe videos start at £0,10 each and are accessible to any UK mobile user. Data charges are included in the price for 02 and 3 customers. The revenue sharing model will remain unchanged, with uploaders receiving around 10% of the profits generated by their contributions. So far, YoSpace's services have redistributed over £800,000 to UK users.
Our take... These moves in the user-generated content space confirm the converging trend towards a cross-operator model where contributors are offered a financial incentive to upload new and popular content. Due to the 'snacking' nature of video UGC and uneven quality, Screen Digest believes the ad-supported model is the most likely to prevail. However, human moderation and editorial selection might be required to ensure a satisfactory minimum inventory quality.
