> Vodafone secures iPhone distribution rights in 10 markets

Vodafone will distribute Apple's iPhone in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, India, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Currently available in the USA, UK, Germany, France, Ireland and Austria, the device is also expected to launch in Canada on the Rogers network. The Vodafone deals appear to have exclusivity on each territory, although Italy seems like it could see develop non-exclusive business models, with TIM having secured distribution rights as well.

Our take...
In its first three quarters of commercialisation, 5.4 million iPhones have been sold. To meet its 10 million sales target by the end of 2008, Apple needs to reach much broader markets and thus speed up its international launches. Exclusivity deals with operators also tend to make operators with important subscriber bases more interesting for Apple. Italy and India Vodafone customer base accounts for 27.5 and 40 million potential customers repsectively.
Since no launch dates have been specified yet, and given Vodafone's vocal interest in 3G capable iPhones, the possibility of an announcement of a new 3G iPhone model at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next June seems even more likely. The conference will also mark the launch of the iPhone's new operating system, making it compatible with popular enterprise environments, in an effort to boost its attractiveness to professional users. The absence of 3G has often been cited as one of the main reasons for underwhelming European sales compared to the US, although the brand has historically enjoyed a much higher popularity on its home territory.
Since iPhone usage sensibly influences data consumption and drives up average subscription price, Apple has a strong case for negotiation and revenue sharing deals should remain the norm in all new markets. With 90% of the subscriber base using prepay, Italy and India could however become testing grounds for new subscription plans. Indian and Italian average revenue per user (ARPU) are respectively 6 euros and 23 euros, compared to 34 euros on iPhone exclusives AT&T (US) and O2 (UK).
