Vodafone will take Nokia phones with the new suite of the handset manufacturer's content services, known as Ovi. The phones will have the Nokia Music Store, N-Gage games distribution and mapping software from Nokia running alongside music, games and mapping services from Vodafone's Live portal. - For games, the phone will link to games on Vodafone Live for Java-based titles, and to Nokia's own store for games based on the new N-Gage platform. Billing for both will be via Vodafone with the operator receiving a revenue share for N-Gage titles.
- Regarding maps, both Google Maps (currently providing mapping services on Vodafone Live) and Nokia's mapping software will be on devices.
- Music has been a contentious area. Both the Vodafone music service and the new Nokia Music Store will co-exist on the device, although the Vodafone store will be given prominence. Vodafone also announced that its music service will be improved with the addition of a PC-based client.
The companies will engage in an ongoing dialogue regarding new services, with Vodafone to be given early access to trial any new services Nokia launch. The first handsets to have all of these services integrated will be launched in early 2008.
Our take... Nokia's Ovi range of content services has not received a warm welcome from mobile operators. The operators have been concerned about the impact of Nokia's storefronts competing against the operators' own portals. This series of agreements between Nokia and Vodafone could mark the start of a long series of negotiations as the handset manufacturer brings its customers on board. Orange, T-Mobile and 3 have all so far refused to take devices with the Nokia Music Store integrated, but the handset giant seems open to making deals to ensure a wide distribution. Whether consumers will be enthused or confused by the range of services available on devices remains to be seen.
