US mobile advertising network Greystripe is to bring its catalogue of ad-supported Java mobile games to Nokia's Ovi Store. Greystripe, which has been backed by more than $17m in funding since October 2006, has previously focused its attention on Java titles available through its direct-to-consumer site Gamejump.com. It has also added support for Apple's iPhone and Google's Android Market. Greystripe will release 1,200 of its Gamejump Java titles on Ovi Store and also plans to launch a new self-service web portal to help developers launch ad-supported Java and Symbian games.
Our take... Ovi Store, launched to a muted reception in mid-2009, has recently been growing. In its Q4 2009 earnings report, Nokia announced that downloads from the store had reached more than 1m per day. Nokia's store, which is available to its range of Symbian series 40 and series 60 devices, has a potential reach that far exceeds Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch (cumulative sales of which recently passed 75m) or Google's Android Market. Screen Digest estimates that Google's Android mobile operating system had around 9m active users by end 2009.
For Greystripe, expanding the reach of its advertising network is vital at a time when the mobile advertising industry is showing signs of consolidation. In November 2009, Google acquired leading mobile advertising network Ad Mob in a deal worth $750m. Apple followed suit with its purchase of mobile ad-network Quattro Wireless for a reported $275m in January 2010. The addition of support for Nokia, still the world's largest handset manufacturer, will help Greystripe expand beyond its core US market. The addition of Greystripe's large catalogue of games is likely to be welcomed by Nokia as it seeks to grow the audience for its Ovi Store.
