Nokia launches N-Gage platform
Finnish handset manufacturer has launched its new N-Gage mobile games platform. Not limited to an individual device like the first iteration of the N-Gage, the technology will be built into the Series 60 handsets. Series 60 is the company's smartphone range; over 16m units were sold in 2006 and 38m in 2007. This development will give the platform significantly greater market reach than the original N-Gage devices; in the first 15 months of N-Gage's lifespan only 1.3m were sold. The N-Gage platform will ultimately run on all Series 60 (smartphone) devices but is limited to a handful of handsets (N81, N82 and N95) at launch. N-Gage games are C++ based, which allows for better performance than J2ME, the programming language used for the majority of mobile games.
Nokia runs and manages the storefront that allows users to download games online to the PC or mobile. The store allows payment by credit card and also integrates with the billing systems of over 80 mobile operators. The N-Gage Arena, a multiplayer and community platform, allows developers to create multiplayer games. Nokia has also developed its own DRM that will allow for so-called super-distribution. Peer-to-peer sharing of games is allowed, with shared versions time-limited before a purchase must be made.
Titles are available from companies including Electronic Arts, Gameloft, Glu, THQ and Vivendi, and cost between 6 and 10 Euros each.
Our take... The relaunched N-Gage has received a warm welcome from the mobile games industry, as it offers a new route to the consumer. The vast majority of mobile games are sold via mobile operators' portals, and operators command a relatively large share of revenues (up to 50 per cent) for this distribution. Operators seem unconcerned about the impact of N-Gage. This is in contrast to the operator's attitudes to the Nokia Music Store; some operators have refused to sell Nokia devices with integration to the handset manufacturer's own Music Store. However, Screen Digest's data shows that the market for mobile games in 2007 was more than four times larger than that for full track mobile music.
Screen Digest anticipates that the N-Gage store will have a positive impact on the mobile games industry. The better browsing experience of an online store and the ability to trial games should lead to a better consumer experience than mobile stores. By sideloading games onto the phone via the PC, users can be certain of not paying additional data charges for transfer over the mobile network. Screen Digest expects that the revenue share taken by Nokia is lower than that taken by mobile operators, particularly in the European region, and so industry revenues should increase.
