> Omnifone launches pre-licensed music phone

Omnifone has revealed plans to release mobile handsets bundled with free music. Purchasers of the optimised devices will have access to a service called MusicStation Max, which is in essence unlimited access to Omnifone's MusicStation. MusicStation currently has a catalogue of 1.6m tracks from all four major labels and some independents. The company is in talks with several handset manufacturers concerning the device, but LG will be the first to produce a MusicStation Max touch-screen phone. The devices will be compatible with any 3G or HSPA enabled network and will be offered globally through mobile network operators. Omnifone plans to target the European and Asia-Pacific markets in particular. MusicStation Max will be offered on 12 to 18 month contracts, depending on the operator, and will also include unlimited data plans to ease downloading. Tracks, playlists, friends and recommendations are all backed up by Omnifone in case devices are lost or damaged. At the end of the contract, users will be able to transfer their downloaded music to another MusicStation Max device.

Our take...
Following Nokia's announcement of the 'Comes With Music' handsets in December 2007, Omnifone have responded with an operator-centric music service. While mobile operators are concerned about losing out on music revenues to Nokia, MusicStation Max ensures that the operator keeps control of the revenues. However, Nokia's Comes With Music devices offer permanent downloads, whereas Omnifone's MusicStation is a rental subscription model only lasting for the time the user keeps a contract with the mobile operator. Although permanent downloads may be more appealing to the consumer, if transferable, rental subscriptions encourage customer loyalty and are therefore more attractive to an operator. Omnifone has not announced which operators will launch the service.
