BPL launches Mobile Jukebox
BPL have launched an on-demand music service called Mobile Jukebox. Consumers pay a monthly subscription of Rs 25 in addition to a per minute charge to listen to music streamed onto their phones. Between 9am and 9pm the per minute charge is Rs 0.5. At other times it is Rs 0.2 a minute. Ringtones of the tracks can be downloaded for Rs 10 each. Listeners can skip or replay any of the 10000 songs in the catalogue. Our take... Mobile music is extremely popular in India, with mobile music outselling physical in 2007. Until now, BPL only offered a ringback tone service and FM radio. In launching a music streaming service, it is following in the footsteps of Airtel who recently launched a similar service called Music on Demand. Airtel's service costs Rs 30 a month which includes 30 minutes of listening time. Additional minutes cost Rs 1 each.
