US satellite operator DISH Networks (formerly Echostar), has signed a deal with Alcatel-Lucent to build a test mobile TV platform in the US. The platform will be based on mobile TV standard DVB-SH and will be trialled until August 2008 in Dish Network's laboratories in Atlanta. Alcatel-Lucent will provide the equipment, test tools and appropriate training.
Our take... Dish Network has recently acquired several licences in the 700 MHz spectrum during the last FCC auction. It will use this spectrum to deploy the terrestrial repeaters necessary to bring mobile TV to urban areas; satellite transmissions will provide coverage in rural areas. Alcatel-Lucent has also signed a deal with ICO, another US satellite operator, to deploy a similar network in the US this summer. With the closure of mobile TV ventures Modeo and Hiwire in 2007, Screen Digest sees DISH's mobile TV move rather risky. The US mobile TV market is currently led by Qualcomm's subsidiary MediaFLO USA which is currently leasing its mobile TV platform to the two largest US mobile operators Verizon and AT&T.
