O2 Germany offers Napster-to-go free
Customers signing up for a DSL contract in O2 Germany's online store between January 16 and March 31 2008 will be given a Napster to Go subscription, worth just over €179, free for a year. An O2 DSL subscription costs a minimum of €20 a month and €30 for inclusive flat-rate surfing. Napster to Go offers unlimited music downloads from its library of over 5m tracks as part of a monthly flat-rate subscription. As a rental model it is necessary to maintain the subscription to listen to any tracks downloaded through the service. Unlike the simple Napster subscription, Napster to Go allows the user to transfer all tracks to an MP3 player, such as a mobile phone. Our take... Napster are keen to expand their European services after the company's deal with O2 Ireland, the first European operator to launch Napster on mobile in December 2006. It seems that with the free music offering O2 Germany is hoping to increase the uptake of its fixed line services, following the recent trend seen by companies bundling music subscription with other services. Vodafone bundled MusicStation into its mobile pay monthly plans in the UK and Nokia is set to launch its 'Comes with Music' service this year offering unlimited downloads with the purchase of selected Nokia devices. It is unclear whether these deals will serve to increase the uptake of the existing services and also if they will have a positive impact on the popularity of mobile music services.
