Luxembourg-based media group RTL launched 3 new mobile TV channels with Vodafone Germany. RTL Crime, RTL Living and Passion will expand the current mobile TV offering which already includes RTL content in channels n-TV and RTL mobile TV. The three channels will be identical to TV counterparts except for news programs which will be shortened to 60 seconds for mobile consumption. The type of content broadcast over those three channels include German TV soaps, thriller series such as Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), and lifestyle programs with British celebrities including Jamie Oliver and Michael Palin for cooking and ex Monty Python comedian Michael Palin for travel.

Our take...
Vodafone Germany launched mobile TV services in November 2004. Vodafone and RTL became mobile TV partners first in 2005 with the launch of popular TV series "Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten" on mobile. RTL owned TV channel n-TV is currently available for free to all 3G subscribers on Vodafone's mobile network. Within the Vodafone Group, Vodafone Germany is the second largest 3G operator after Vodafone Italy with just over 5.3m 3G subscribers. The 3 additional channels from RTL will expand Vodafone's content portfolio to 35 mobile TV channels including Boomerang, Cartoon Network, CNN, Eurosport, MTV, Nickelodeon ProSieben and Sat.1. T-Mobile Germany also offers a mobile TV service with a similar bouquet but does not yet include RTL Crime, RTL Living and Passion, thereby giving a competitive advantage to Vodafone with regards to mobile TV.
