MobiTV counts 3.5m subscribers
North American mobile and broadband TV service provider MobiTV recently reported 3.5m subscribers spread across several carriers for which the company delivers TV content to. MobiTV subscriber base has followed an impressive growth during the past two years with 1m and 1.5m additions in 2006 and 2007 respectively. The mobile TV pioneer which optimistically expects mobile TV to reach mass market this year is betting on cross-platform delivery, advertising and interactivity, and better content line-up to further expand its growth. In the past 4 months, MobiTV has signed three premium content deals with Fox and Disney to bring ESPN, Disney Channel and FOX Business Network to its mobile subscribers. The company, which is present in eight countries on the American continent and has over 20 carrier deals including US market leaders AT&T, Sprint and Alltel, is continuously looking to expand its reach by looking at all delivery platform. MobiTV which typically delivers mobile TV over 3G networks, recently announced its participation aside Samsung Electronics, Nokia Siemens in the upcoming broadcaster mobile TV standard ATSC M/H. MobiTV also demonstrated its ability to deliver content over WiMAX at the WiMAX World Conference last September.
Our take... The impressive subscriber growth advertised by MobiTV often leads to the wrong interpretations over the state of the mobile TV market in North America. Firstly, MobiTV has been targeting the fixed broadband sector since 2006 and is involved in AT&T Broadband TV, AT&T U-Verse and CenturyTel Broadband TV. Secondly, MobiTV has been offering mobile radio services since November 2005. Thirdly, although the bulk of the subscriber base is located in the US, the company has strong partnerships with mobile market leaders in Canada (Rogers, Bell, Telus), Mexico (Telcel), Ecuador (Movistar), Brazil (Claro), Nicaragua (Claro) and Peru (Movistar). MobiTV does not disclose subscribers breakdown. Screen Digest believes that out of the 3.5m subscribers, 2.5m actually subscribe to MobiTV's mobile TV service in the US. This is roughly equivalent to the total number mobile TV subscribers in France and Italy combined. It also corresponds to less than one per cent of the total US mobile subscriber base and 5.3 per cent of the total US 3G subscriber base.
